Kenshin // Engine Oil Bottle Design

Overview

Kenshin is a 1-liter engine oil bottle designed for a client in the automotive sector, featuring a distinctive spout mechanism for improved precision and user control during pouring. Developed during my time at Story Design, the project aimed to elevate a functional product into a refined, brand-forward packaging solution. The design balances strong shelf presence with an aggressive design & ergonomic handling, while also considering manufacturing feasibility and cost efficiency.

Challenge

How might we design a 1-liter bottle that not only stood out on the shelf but also offered a better pouring experience?

The engine oil segment is saturated with generic packaging that prioritizes function over user experience or brand differentiation. We had to achieve this within strict manufacturing constraints, balancing visual appeal, ergonomics, and cost-effectiveness.

Outcome

The final design features an aggressive and sculptural form inspired by the silhouette of a gorilla, conveying strength, stability, and control. The bold geometry gave the product strong shelf presence while reinforcing brand identity. The custom spout added functional value by improving precision and ease of use. The design was well received by the client and successfully transitioned toward production.

Role

I was responsible for leading the industrial design direction of the project, from early research to final concept development. My role included market benchmarking, form exploration, ergonomic studies, 3D modeling, and CMF planning. I also developed high-quality renders to communicate the design intent and worked closely with the internal team to align the design with production and branding requirements.

Context

In the competitive automotive lubricant market, packaging plays a crucial role in both brand recall and user experience. Most 1-liter engine oil bottles follow generic design norms, offering little in terms of differentiation or ergonomics. This project was initiated to create a distinctive and functional packaging solution that would stand out on shelves while improving usability for both professional and personal users.

As the demand for meat rises, the use of hormones and industrial farming raises concerns about health, sustainability, and food quality. This has led many to explore veganism and plant-based diets as alternatives. However, despite growing interest, people often struggle to stay committed due to limited knowledge, accessibility, and support—leading many to give up. We needed to find solutions to tackle this problem.

Approach

The approach began by defining the core emotion we wanted the product to evoke, focusing on strength, control, and confidence. Through mind mapping and sketch explorations, I arrived at an aggressive, sculptural silhouette that could reflect these qualities. In parallel, I brainstormed alternative spout mechanisms to enhance the pouring experience, aiming for better precision, grip, and flow control. These directions were developed through iterative sketching and 3D form studies.

Solution

The final design features a bold and sculptural silhouette inspired by the strength of a gorilla, conveying stability and control. A unique spout mechanism improves pouring precision and user comfort.
